Amid cautious optimism … “positive” progress in Iran’s nuclear talks
The American official described the direct and indirect discussions between the two parties as “positive”.
He added that the two sides agreed to meet again next week to continue the talks.
On the other hand, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqji pointed out that “the relatively positive atmosphere in Rome enabled us to make progress regarding the principles and goals of the potential agreement,” explaining that his country is currently feeling “a degree of optimism but with a lot of caution.”
The Iranian minister added that “the 2015 nuclear agreement is no longer appropriate” for his country, but he stressed his country’s readiness to start a negotiating path at the level of experts in the coming days “with the aim of defining the details related to any new agreement.”
Iranian officials had stated earlier that there would be technical talks in Oman in the coming days, and that the American envoy Steve Witkeov and Iranian Foreign Minister will meet again on April 26.
US President Donald Trump, who withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran and the global forces during his first term in 2018, threatened to attack Iran unless it reached a new agreement that prevents it from developing a nuclear weapon.
Iran, which says its nuclear program is peaceful, announced its willingness to discuss the imposition of limited restrictions on its nuclear activities in exchange for lifting international sanctions.
